The Forest Pretends
Most people walked past the fallen branch without seeing it.
Wood. Moss. Rot.
Nothing more.
But children slowed down.
They saw the dragon immediately—
its long snout half-buried in leaves, its teeth still sharp with warning.
“Careful,” one whispered.
“It’s sleeping.”
And perhaps it was.
The forest has always hidden things
inside ordinary shapes.
A kingdom in tree roots.
A giant in stone.
A dragon in deadwood.
Adults forget this because they spend too much time naming things correctly.
But the wild does not care for correct names.
It only waits
for someone willing
to imagine it awake again.
