Payment is not always money.

Not coins exchanged,
not numbers transferred,
not something
easily counted.

Sometimes
payment is time.

Energy given,
effort spent,
pieces of ourselves
offered without measure.

Sometimes
the cost is invisible.

A quiet sacrifice.
A moment swallowed.
A choice made
that no one else sees.

I have learned
that everything
has a price—

but not everything
is worth paying.

And some things—love,
kindness,truth—

are never meant
to be transactional.

They are given freely,
or not at all.
