The Keeper of Hours
It was never meant to be seen.
Hidden between shelves of forgotten books and candlelight that never quite went out,it sat—watching.
Not alive. Not entirely.
Its eyes were clocks, measuring more than time.
Scholars had come and gone, turning pages, chasing answers, never noticing the quiet ticking that did not belong to any clock in the room.
But it noticed them.
Each question asked. Each truth avoided. Each moment wasted.
Time, it had learned, was not counted in seconds but in awareness.
One evening,a reader lingered longer than the others.
She paused.Looked up.
And for the first time—the Keeper felt something shift.
Recognition.
The ticking slowed.
Because time, when truly seen, does not rush.
It listens.
And somewhere between the turning gears and the soft glow of candlelight, the machine understood what it had been guarding all along:
Not time itself—but the moments we finally wake up inside it.
