Describe something you learned in high school.

💫Daily Prompt  Word Press

Only one thing? That’s almost impossible…

But there are two that stayed with me.

I learned how to build and dismantle a camera—to understand it from the inside out.

And I learned to develop photographs in a darkroom.

That quiet space, where images slowly appeared out of nothing…

like memories finding their way into the light.

There was something magical in that. Still is.

And then—something very different.

Typewriting.

Speed, precision…and not looking at the keys.

Our teacher stood there with a stopwatch, timing every movement, every mistake.

It was discipline. Focus. Trusting your hands to know what your mind had learned.

Looking back now, it feels almost symbolic.

One skill taught me how to bring images into light—

the other taught me how to trust the flow without needing to see every step.

And somehow…

I still use both.

I was a pick and peck typewriter, still am, but I got quick, and when we got electric typewriters, I could type quicker then some could talk, which was good because that was my job

developing film and using an enlarger was great…going into a dark room to take film out of that container, then putting it into that other container, adding the chemicals…and negatives, exploding, developing…I loved that process.. I was only able to do that for about a year, and I grew to love black and white photography….then double exposures, learning how to push process film, and play around with the speeds…now, it’s not the same..

I loved reading this… you took me right back there. That whole process in the darkroom—it really was something special, wasn’t it?The waiting, the not knowing… and then suddenly, the image appearing like it had always been there, just hidden for a moment.I think that’s what made it magical. It wasn’t instant. It asked for patience… presence. And I smiled at the typewriter part—there’s something about finding your own rhythm, whether it’s “proper” technique or not.Your hands just learn in their own way. You’re right… it’s not the same now.But maybe that’s why those memories feel so rich—because we were fully inside the process.Thank you for sharing this… I could almost smell the chemicals again. 💜✨
