Love, Strength, and the Reality of Kidney Failure

D is for Dialysis.

A word I never thought would become part of my everyday life.

But for the past six years,it has been woven into our days, our routines, our reality.

My husband is bedridden. And three times a week, the ambulance comes and pick him up , life revolves around treatment.

Machines. Time. Waiting.Endurance.

Dialysis is not just a procedure.

It is a lifeline.

When the kidneys can no longer do their job —filtering toxins, balancing fluids, keeping the body in harmony —dialysis steps in to do that work.

But it comes at a cost.

It takes time. It takes energy. It takes strength —not just from the one receiving it,but from everyone who loves them.

I have become more than a wife.

I am a caregiver. A nurse. A support system. A witness to both resilience and exhaustion.

There are days filled with quiet courage. And days that feel heavy beyond words.

Kidney failure is often invisible to the outside world.

People don’t always see the fatigue. The restrictions. The emotional weight.

But it is there. Every single day.

So today,I write this not only as part of a challenge…

but as awareness.

Because behind the word dialysis are real people, real families, real lives adapting to something they never chose.

There is strength. There is showing up, again and again, even when it’s hard.

My grandad died of kidney failure. My best friend had a kidney transplants nearly 20 years ago, but before that, he was on dialysis for 2 years. X
