Your challenge for this week
Write about a moment that changed everything — but only describe the seconds before it happened.

Ten Minutes Before
The phone call was ordinary.
That’s what I remember most.
His voice carried the small, familiar tiredness
that always followed dialysis—
not pain, just that quiet drain
of something deeper than energy.
“Do we need anything from IKEA?”
Such a simple question.
So practical.
So him.
I stood in the kitchen, half-thinking about dinner,
half-thinking about nothing at all—
the rhythm of an ordinary day
folding into the next.
I remember glancing at the clock.
I remember the light through the window—
soft, unremarkable,
the kind of light that doesn’t announce anything.
I remember answering casually,
like there would be more conversations after this one.
Like time was still something we owned.
There was no warning.
No shift in the air.
No crack in the moment.
Just a man asking about food
on his way home.
Just a wife answering
without knowing she was standing
on the edge of a life
that was about to disappear.
If I had known…
I would have stayed longer in that call.
Listened harder.
Memorised the sound of him
before everything changed its shape.
But I didn’t know.
And that is how life does it—
not with thunder,
not with signs—
but with quiet, ordinary seconds
that don’t realise
they are the last of their kind….
