In response to Jim’s prompt:
This week for song lyric Sunday our theme is to find a song related to Freud’s ID theory.

This week’s theme is inspired by Freud’s Id — the part of the psyche driven by instinct, desire, and immediate gratification.
My choice is Hysteria by Muse.
Released in 2003 on the album Absolution, Hysteria was written by Matt Bellamy and quickly became one of Muse’s most recognizable tracks, driven by its powerful bassline and intense emotional energy.
If Freud described the Id as the force that demands “I want it now”, then Hysteria feels like its soundtrack.
From the very beginning, the song pulses with urgency — not calm, not controlled, but restless and consuming. It captures that overwhelming need for connection, desire, and release. There’s no patience here, no rational filtering. Just feeling.
A line that captures this intensity perfectly:
“I want it now, I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul…”
This is the Id in motion — craving, demanding, unable to wait.
What makes Hysteria so powerful is that it doesn’t try to soften that energy. It embraces it. The tension, the longing, the almost desperate need to feel something real — it all builds into a kind of emotional overload.
And maybe that’s why it resonates.
Because beneath our logic, beneath our control, there’s always a part of us that feels first, thinks later. A part that wants, needs, and reaches without hesitation.
That’s the Id.
And Hysteria doesn’t hide it — it amplifies it.
