This is an image from a 1934 film where the couple have their arms linked and they are sipping cocktails. This is to celebrate National Cocktail Day!Maureen O’Sullivan and William Powell Star in The Thin Man

Not the Glass

They link arms like it’s effortless, like this is what closeness looks like — polished, smiling, something to sip and share.

But I’ve seen the other side of glasses.

Not crystal and laughter, but silence that thickens, voices that change, love that slips out of reach the deeper the bottle empties. I learned early that not everything poured is meant to be held.

So when I look at this image, I don’t see the drink.
I see the space between them.

The way they lean toward each other.
The way their eyes meet, not the glasses.
The quiet agreement of being present in the same moment.

That’s the part I believe in.

Not what fills the glass, but what fills the space between two people when nothing else is needed. No escape. No numbing. Just being there, fully, without disappearing.

Maybe celebration doesn’t have to come in a drink.
Maybe it’s found in connection that stays steady, clear, and real.
