This week’s theme is to find a song related to drugs, chemical substances, prescription medications, alcohol, or tobacco.
My choice is Sober by Demi Lovato.
Released in 2018, Sober is not a typical pop song. It’s a confession.
Written by Demi Lovato, Tushar Apte, Warrington Gillette, and others, the song openly addresses relapse after a period of sobriety. There’s no metaphor hiding the truth here — it’s direct, vulnerable, and painfully honest.
From this line, you understand that this is something real.
“Mama, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore…”
That line alone sets the tone. It’s not about image, not about performance — it’s about accountability, guilt, and the courage it takes to admit when you’ve fallen.
What makes Sober so powerful is that it doesn’t try to be polished. It allows discomfort. It allows imperfection. And in doing so, it creates space for others who may be struggling in silence.
Songs like this remind us that addiction isn’t just about substances — it’s about pain, coping, and the ongoing fight to heal.
For me, this song is about truth.
Not the kind that is easy to share — but the kind that matters.
