Where the Tide Was
These wet stones along the shore
still hold the shape of water.
Seaweed clings in tired ribbons,
barnacles pale as old scars,
the tide having slipped away
without apology.
I walk the exposed ground slowly,
as if stepping through memory.
There are places the sea once filled
that now breathe air again —
small pools reflecting sky,
quiet, temporary mirrors.
It makes me think of absence:
how something leaving
can reveal the map
of where it lived.
Soon the water will return,
smoothing everything again.
But for this moment
the shoreline shows its bones,
and I recognize
myself in it.
