Under the Paint
At first glance, it looks like a broken mask.
The cracks spread across her face like a shell that has finally given up holding something inside. For a moment you believe the illusion — that a different face lives beneath, waiting to step forward once the painted skin falls away. That is the magic of body paint, the way art can trick the eye into seeing two realities at once.
But the longer I look, the more it feels familiar.
We all carry versions of ourselves painted carefully on the outside. The polite smile. The confident voice. The calm expression that hides the storms we don’t always share with the world.
Sometimes life chips away at those layers.
And when it does, what appears underneath isn’t weakness. It’s truth. Not a new face — just the one that was there all along, waiting for the courage to be seen.
Maybe the cracks are not damage at all.
Maybe they are simply the moment the real self begins to breathe.
