The first note appeared on my kitchen table.
I knew I hadn’t left it there.
One small square of paper, folded twice,
my name written in a handwriting that felt strangely familiar.
Inside, only four words:
Go outside. Look down.
I almost laughed.
But curiosity is a stubborn creature.
On the pavement outside my door sat the second note,
tucked beneath a small stone.
You always hesitate too long.
My stomach tightened.
Whoever was doing this knew me.
The third note waited at the corner café.
You used to dream bigger here.
The fourth rested on the park bench where I once cried
after a life that no longer fit me.
You forgot how strong you were.
I began to understand.
Each note led me somewhere I had once been —
a map of quiet moments
I had buried under routine and survival.
The final note waited at the overlook above the sea.
No instructions.
Just one sentence.
You already know the way forward.
I turned the paper over.
The handwriting was unmistakable now.
Mine.
And suddenly it made sense.
The notes weren’t left by someone who knew me better than I did.
They were left by the person
I used to be
before I forgot myself.
