Dawn Messenger

Before the village wakes,
one small bird
threads its voice through blue air.
Not song exactly—
more a promise
stitched between branches.
I listen from the doorway,
coffee warming my hands,
wondering who first taught
feathers
how to carry morning
so gently
into the day.

Oh, Maggie. I was all set to tell you this was a stunning line:

    “more a promise
    stitched between branches.”

…and then I got to this:

    “wondering who first taught
    feathers
    how to carry morning
    so gently
    into the day.”

Goodness. So gorgeous. I want to read this again and again.

As if birdsong as a ‘promise stitched between branches’ wasn’t good enough, your closing 3 lines just TOTALLY blew me away! Thanks

Lovely write. But those bastard birds woke me up well before I wanted this morning, complaining about the rain. I could even hear them over my tinnitus!
