What is one question you hate to be asked? Explain.

“Why don’t you speak better Spanish after living here so long?”
That one.
It’s not asked with cruelty most of the time.
But it still stings.
I’ve taken several Spanish classes. I’ve tried. I still try. But languages in my head don’t sit neatly in separate boxes.
Born in one country.
Raised in another.
Living in a third.
English, Norwegian… and now Spanish.
Sometimes the words collide. Sometimes the grammar feels like a puzzle I just don’t enjoy solving. I’ve never loved grammatical rules — they feel like fences around communication.
I can communicate. I manage daily life. I understand far more than I speak.
But fluency? That’s different.
And here’s the quiet part people don’t see:
Chronic illness affects memory. Stress affects recall. Fatigue affects confidence. When your nervous system is overloaded, conjugating verbs is not the top priority.
So when someone asks that question, it feels like they are measuring effort without knowing the full story.
I am not lazy.
I am layered.
I am learning at my pace.
In a brain that already carries three languages and a thousand responsibilities.
Growth doesn’t look the same for everyone.
And sometimes survival is the bigger achievement than perfect grammar.

It’s actually a very interesting point.
Language can be funny sometimes. Certain phrases are used simply out of habit, without people really thinking about what they mean.
“How do you do?” is one of those expressions.
It isn’t really a question expecting a real answer. It’s more of a social ritual, something people say automatically when meeting someone.
But when you think about it literally, it does sound strange.
Do they mean:
How am I today?
How am I feeling?
How is life treating me?
Sometimes language carries traditions that no one really questions anymore.
For someone like me, who already has several languages swirling around in my head, these little quirks can feel even more confusing.
But they also remind me how fascinating language really is.
And how differently we all interpret the same words.
Thank you my friend ♥️.
