Before the Song Begins
It wasn’t born an anthem. It was born a moment — smoke in the air, uncertainty on the water, a flag still standing when morning came. Years later, a pen made it official, but the feeling had already lived in people long before ink touched paper.
I think about how songs become symbols. How a melody can carry pride for some and complicated memory for others. An anthem isn’t just a tune — it’s a mirror held up to a nation, reflecting both its promises and its unfinished work.
When the music starts, people stand. Hands over hearts. Voices rising in unison. And yet beneath the harmony are thousands of different stories — ancestors who arrived freely, ancestors who didn’t, ancestors who were already there.
What does it mean to sing together? Is it loyalty? Hope? Habit? Maybe it’s a quiet agreement that we are still trying to become something better than we were yesterday.
The flag in the song survived the night. That image lingers — not perfection, not victory without cost, but endurance. Sometimes survival is the only verse that matters.
Before the song begins, there is a breath.
In that breath lives the question every generation must answer: what are we standing for now?
