The Silence Between Trains

They stood on opposite ends of the platform,
late afternoon sun threading gold through steel beams,
the quiet hum of an approaching train beneath their feet.

She was reading a dog-eared book;
he was pretending not to watch her.

When the wind shifted,
her hat lifted and fell —
not to the ground,
but into his outstretched hand.

Their eyes met then,
just for a breath —
not long enough to name the moment,
only long enough to feel it.

He handed her the hat back,
and in that passing of fabric
something unspoken passed too —
a soft pulse of recognition,
like greeting a place you almost remember.

The train rattled in.
She stepped back; he stepped forward —
their feet aligned for a flicker of time
before the doors slid open.

No names were said.
No stories shared.
No echoes followed them afterward.
Just a fraction of something — tender,
and gone.

Later that night,
neither of them could tell
what exactly had happened
on that sun-lit platform.

Only that for one heartbeat
the world had felt
entirely, inexplicably
gentle.

And then it was gone.
