In response to Fandango’s One-Word Challenge:

Congratulations

We say it so easily.

For birthdays.
For achievements.
For milestones wrapped in ribbons.

But this week, I learned another meaning.

Congratulations for holding the door when the water came.
Congratulations for standing ankle-deep in mud and not collapsing.
Congratulations for being the calm when your daughters went silent.
Congratulations for three years of holding a bedridden husband with steady hands and steady love.

Not all victories look like trophies.

Some look like mops.
Buckets.
Wet towels.
And choosing not to break.

The water pulled back.

The house still stands.

The family still stands.

And sometimes, that is the only award that matters.

So today I whisper it quietly — not loudly, not publicly, not for applause —

Congratulations
for surviving the storm
and remaining soft.
