Irrigation

I used to think irrigation was gentle.
Measured.
Intentional.

Water guided through channels.
Water invited.
Water controlled.

Yesterday, the water did not ask.

It rushed down from Montaña T with the wild certainty of gravity. It found every crack, every forgotten weakness, every place we assumed was safe. It crossed the threshold without knocking.

The hall filled first — mud swirling around our ankles like something ancient reclaiming ground. The living room followed. Then my bedroom. And from above, the roof began to leak as if the sky itself had decided to participate.

Irrigation, I learned, is not about water.

It is about direction.

When water is guided, it nourishes. When it is ignored, it invades. When it is underestimated, it humbles.

We tried to lead it away from the house.
We built small barriers. Redirected what we could.
And eventually — it pulled back.

That is the mercy of water too.
It retreats.

Today the floors are wet. The air is heavy. The buckets stand like quiet sentinels beneath the roof leaks. Tomorrow, they say, more rain may come.

But now I understand something differently.

Irrigation is not control.
It is preparation.
It is respect.
It is knowing that what flows will always follow the path of least resistance — and choosing to strengthen that path before the storm arrives.

Water teaches.
Even when it hurts.

And when it recedes, it leaves behind more than mud.
It leaves clarity.

Water is not good if it gets in the house, there’s nothing stronger than the power of water flowing!
