Todays word-Cold-hearted

I have been called cold-hearted.
For not speaking to my alcoholic mother
for thirteen years.
For choosing peace.
For choosing my children.
For choosing myself.
Sometimes people mistake boundaries
for cruelty.
They confuse distance with lack of love.
They believe endurance equals loyalty.
But protecting your children
is not cold.
Protecting your mental health
is not cold.
Breaking a cycle
is not cold.
Enough is enough.
Forgiveness does not require access.
Compassion does not require proximity.
I have forgiven her.
But I will never excuse the damage.
If that makes me cold-hearted,
so be it.
Ice can preserve what fire would destroy.
And sometimes strength
looks like walking away.
