Last Stop Before Tulsa

The sign promised pie and coffee.

We hadn’t spoken since Amarillo, just miles and radio static between us. When I pulled into Shelly’s Café, the bunting snapped in the July wind like a dare.

Inside, the waitress called everyone “hon.” Outside, the cement chef grinned forever.

Over cherry pie, he finally said it. “I don’t want to go back.”

Neither did I.

Route 66 shimmered beyond the window—long, open, forgiving.

We left Tulsa off the map and followed the road instead.

Some beautiful lines in this piece. “the bunting snapped in the July wind like a dare” was one of my favorites. Great job of building tension too. Well done.

This is wonderful writing, Maggie. It seems they were both worried about the other’s reaction. Lovely to see it was for naught.

A great story, told just right, Maggie. You made me think of that old song, “24 Hours from Tulsa.”
