Passing Through
He almost didn’t notice the boy.
Head down. Cap low. Morning already half-spent. The city moved in its usual rhythm — traffic sighing, footsteps tapping, someone laughing too loudly somewhere behind him.
He took another sip from his cup and kept walking.
That’s when he saw it.
The mural.
A yellow brick wall. A child sitting on top of it, hand lifted toward painted seagulls frozen mid-flight. Leaves caught in a wind that would never finish blowing. And there — just ahead — another painted man walking in the opposite direction.
For a moment, the real man slowed.
The painted man was about to pass him
Same posture. Same forward lean. Same quiet determination of someone going somewhere without being entirely sure why.
The boy on the wall seemed to be watching them both.
You used to sit still, the boy might have said.
You used to look up.
The real man glanced at the painted sky — faded blue, brushed with artificial freedom. The seagulls were trapped in pigment, yet somehow lighter than he felt.
He stepped forward.
The painted man stepped too.
For one heartbeat, shadow crossed color. Real passed illusion. Present passed memory.
He didn’t stop walking.
But he lifted his head.
Just a little.
And somewhere behind him, on a wall that would never age, a boy kept reaching toward birds that never landed.
