What do you see ? #328
In response to Sadje’s prompt:

He sits round and patient,
a small flame against winter’s breath.
Red breast bright as a heartbeat,
as if love itself decided
to perch awhile.
They say robins visit
when someone we miss
is near.
Not loud.
Not frightening.
Just present.
Branches hold their berries like rosary beads.
The air is thin with cold,
yet he stays—
fluffed against the frost,
proof that warmth can live
inside fragile things.
For some, it is the robin.
For me, it has been ravens
circling volcanic skies,
and an owl appearing
again and again
since the 2024 October’s silence
took a voice from this world.
Sixteen months of feathers.
Sixteen months of signs
that grief does not end in absence—
it transforms into attention.
What do I see?
Not just a bird.
But a messenger in red and grey,
reminding us
that love migrates differently.
It does not leave.
It changes shape.
