No Such Thing as Bad Weather

They walk anyway.

Hats lowered, coats pulled close,
boots pressing their claim
into a mirrored world.

Rain does not ask permission.
It simply falls —
a steady handwriting across the day.

Trees stand stripped of leaves,
inked thin against the sky,
while puddles memorize
each passing step.

Growing up, we said
there is no such thing as bad weather —
only bad clothes.

So they walk.
Together,
through the blur and silver wash,
through streets that shine
like opened oysters.

The best walks
are not always given sun.
Sometimes they are given
weather enough
to prove
you meant to go.

A great poetic ekphrastic poem. I liked this line…

    through streets that shine
    like opened oysters.

Beautifully descriptive which brings me right back to the Netherlands where it always seemed to rain. I love these lines “a steady handwriting across the day.” and “inked thin against the sky,”

Hopefully there will always be someone’s fool and child and free enough to be singin’ in the rain …

An ekphrastic delight, Maggie, and so true. I enjoy a good walk in all kinds of weather, like the people in the image and your poem, ‘boots pressing their claim into a mirrored world’, and I love these lines especially:

    ‘Rain does not ask permission.
    It simply falls —
a steady handwriting across the day’,

    ‘… puddles memorize
    each passing step’

and the simile ‘streets that shine like opened oysters’.

I think any walk is good, but perhaps in bad weather with less visual impression we can focus on the inner journey.
