Where the Line Is

I had to read it twice to understand what I was looking at, the marks on the side of the ship like a ruler for the sea. Someone once decided there had to be a limit, a point where enough was enough, even if money wanted more. Before that, ships sank quietly and people disappeared, and it was treated like the cost of doing business.

What strikes me is that the mark isn’t dramatic. It’s just a line. A boundary drawn in paint that says this much weight is safe, and anything more is danger pretending to be ambition. I wonder how many lives were saved by someone insisting on something so ordinary.

I don’t have lines like that on my own life. No visible measure that tells me when I’m overloaded, when I’ve taken on too much, when rest is no longer optional. I keep thinking I can carry more, that one more responsibility won’t matter, until the waterline is already rising.

Maybe the real lesson isn’t about ships at all. Maybe it’s about having the courage to draw a line and defend it, even when others want you to cross it. Maybe knowing where the mark is can be the thing that keeps you afloat.
