Between Tides
The little black house stands as if it has chosen solitude.
Water approaches, retreats,
approaches again—
never quite committing.
A warning sign leans into the sky,
as though even silence
needs instructions.
Benches wait for conversations
that may or may not return.
The pier holds its breath
between departures.
I think of all the times
we build ourselves at the edge—
close enough to feel change,
far enough to survive it.
The tide doesn’t ask permission.
It reshapes what it touches.
Still, the house remains.
Weathered, steady,
unapologetic.
There is strength
in standing where the world moves
and not being carried away.
And there is wisdom
in knowing
when to step back from the water.
