The Landing

Winter narrowed the world to stone and snow.
From the landing, the stairs fell away like a held breath.
Someone had hung an evergreen ornament between the walls, its lights blinking bravely against the cold. It didn’t belong there—no door, no church, no celebration left.
Cars passed. Boots crossed the street. No one stopped.
Still, the ornament glowed.
I stood a moment longer, warmed by the thought that hope doesn’t need permission—only a place to hang.
