Helping themselves was not about gain — it was about dignity.

When Fairness Was Never on the Table
Why shouldn’t they help themselves, after the way they’d been treated?
The question didn’t come from greed. It came from exhaustion.
They had done everything that was asked of them — filled out forms, waited in lines, accepted explanations that never quite explained anything. They were told the system was slow but fair, that patience would be rewarded, that rules existed to protect everyone equally.
Experience told a different story.
Resources flowed upward. Consequences flowed downward. Those at the margins learned quickly what equal meant in practice. Promises were made in public. Exceptions were granted in private.
So when they took what should have been theirs all along — time, space, voice, dignity — it wasn’t rebellion. It was correction.
They didn’t call it entitlement. They called it survival.
Critics would say there were proper channels, better ways, polite methods of appeal. But those channels were narrow, guarded, and conveniently clogged whenever justice threatened comfort.
Helping themselves was not about gaining advantage.
It was about refusing disadvantage.
And if fairness had truly been offered from the start, the question would never have needed asking at all.
