Scratch an Itch
“Scratch an itch”—
a simple phrase,
a tiny human gesture,
but also such a good metaphor for how we live.
An itch isn’t always literal.
Sometimes it’s a nagging thought
that keeps tugging at the back of my mind,
a question I haven’t answered,
a feeling I haven’t quite named.
Some itches go away if I ignore them—
but others get louder,
persistent,
demanding attention
until I give them the space they need.
To scratch an itch is to acknowledge it—
to feel it fully before relief arrives.
And relief isn’t always instant.
Sometimes it’s slow,
a sort of rub-rub-rub
that loosens the tension
around nervous thoughts
until it whispers,
okay, that helps.
Which makes me think…
maybe there’s wisdom in itches—
like they’re messages waiting to be understood:
curiosity, longing, unanswered yeses,
maybe even hope.
So today, I scratch the itch
for clarity,
for truth,
for words I haven’t spoken,
for things I’ve been meaning to say.
And as I do,
I notice that the world feels
a little bit softer
on the other side of that itch.
