Soul Recognition

It was the words that found me,
not the face.

A voice moving ahead of form,
language carrying a signature
older than images.

I felt it—
that small, undeniable shock—
recognising a soul
before the pictures arrived.

As if memory lives
first in sound,
and only later
learns a face.

Maggie, I think soul lives outside of the constraints of time, so…

Perhaps that’s why the words arrived first — time hadn’t caught up yet.

The timbre of a voice and words can hold the key to the soul, Maggie, and you expressed that beautifully in your poem. Yes:

    ‘As if memory lives
    first in sound,
    and only later
    learns a face.’

Thank you. I do believe memory listens before it looks — I’m grateful you heard that in the poem.

The voice we live with, the motion rocking us to sleep, the lyricism of lullabies floating peacefully in fluid .. what a gorgeous, gorgeous poem.
