Story Starter #232
This week’s Story Starter teaser is:
She’d only given in because she was lonely…..

The Reason She Didn’t Say No
She’d only given in because she was lonely.
At least, that’s how she explained it to herself — neat, reasonable, easy to carry. Loneliness sounded less reckless than hope, less foolish than wanting.
It wasn’t the kind of loneliness that announces itself loudly. It arrived in the quiet hours, when conversations ended and the house settled into its familiar stillness. When even the walls seemed to listen and find nothing to answer back.
He hadn’t promised anything. That was part of the appeal. No expectations meant no disappointment — or so she believed. A shared coffee. A message answered quickly. Someone noticing when she spoke.
Small things. Dangerous things.
She told herself it wasn’t attachment, just company. That she could step away whenever she chose. That this was temporary, a bridge over an empty stretch of days.
But loneliness has a way of lowering the volume on doubt. It softens the questions we’d usually ask. It makes almost enough feel like plenty.
When it ended — as these things often do — she didn’t fall apart. She simply felt the quiet return, heavier now for having been interrupted. The absence sharper because it had briefly been filled.
Later, much later, she would understand.
She hadn’t given in because she was weak.
She’d given in because she was human.
And learning the difference took longer than she expected.
