The sign hummed softly, blue light pooling in the hallway like a held breath. Arcade. A promise, or maybe a dare.
He stepped inside, shoes echoing down the tunnel, LEDs guiding him forward. At the far end, machines blinked and sang—coins, colors, looping joy. Every game he remembered was waiting.
He reached for a joystick, fingers tingling.
The screen lit up with his name.
INSERT COIN, it said.
He searched his pockets, confused, until the glass reflected back the truth:
no shadow, no weight—only memory.
The machine chimed.
PLAYER ONE — CONTINUE?
He smiled.
Some souls don’t move on.
They level up.

“Okay,” he said quietly, “what’s our goal today?”
“The whole world,” a voice chimed in behind him. “No one else can see it.”
He turned around slowly, the room darkening with anticipation.
