Monday Poetry Prompt: Service, Son, Today
What Remains

I learned service
not from uniforms or vows,
but from the way you showed up
even when tired,
even when afraid.
You were someone’s son
before you were anything else—
before duty,
before mistakes,
before the weight of expectation
found your shoulders.
Today
I see how love disguises itself
as patience,
as staying,
as choosing kindness
when no one is watching.
There is no medal for this kind of service.
Only the quiet knowing
that what you gave
mattered.
And that somehow,
in giving it,
you were still learning
how to belong.
