When he didn’t reply, I immediately thought, “They’ve got him and now they’re coming for me.”

The Silence Between Messages

When he didn’t reply, I immediately thought, They’ve got him and now they’re coming for me.

The thought arrived fully formed, like it had been waiting just beneath the surface. No evidence. No warning. Just silence — and the mind’s remarkable ability to turn quiet into catastrophe.

I checked my phone again. Nothing. The last message sat there, unchanged, innocent even. A simple question. A blue tick that had vanished into doubt.

I stood by the window, scanning the street below. Everything looked normal, which somehow made it worse. Cars passed. A dog barked. Someone laughed. Ordinary life continuing while my imagination assembled a darker version just out of sight.

I told myself this was ridiculous. People get busy. Signals drop. Time slips.

But fear doesn’t listen to reason. Fear listens to echoes — old ones. It remembers every time silence meant danger, every moment when not knowing became a threat. It doesn’t ask what is happening?
It asks what if?

I began rehearsing escape routes. What to grab. Where to go. My heart paced faster than my thoughts.

Then the phone buzzed.

Sorry — meeting ran long. What’s up?

Just like that, the walls fell back into place. The street returned to itself. The imagined footsteps faded. Relief rushed in, almost embarrassing in its intensity.

I laughed quietly, at myself more than anything.

Sometimes the danger isn’t them.
Sometimes it’s the stories we tell ourselves in the absence of answers.

And sometimes, the bravest thing we do is sit with the silence long enough to let it tell the truth.

Unnecessary panic arises from irrational fear or anxiety that is disproportionate to the actual, immediate danger. Nice story, Maggie.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Sometimes the story isn’t about the danger itself, but about how our minds respond to uncertainty.

Just because you think everybody and everything is out to get you doesn’t mean that you’re paranoid, right?

It will depend on your ( trauma) experiences in the past.
