Inventory

He thought reckoning would arrive like thunder.
Instead, it came quietly, while folding laundry, while counting pills, while noticing how carefully he avoided mirrors.

He listed his debts the way he’d learned to list sins: what he’d taken, what he’d denied, what he’d called survival when it was really fear. He’d told himself small lies first. Then larger ones. Eventually, they stacked like stones.

He imagined the end not as punishment, but as sorting. What could be released. What could finally rest.

“Bury me with the lies I told,” he thought, not as a wish, but as an instruction. Let them stay underground. Let the truth breathe above him, unarmed.

He didn’t need absolution.
He needed honesty.
And the courage to live what remained without adding to the grave.

Maggie, I agree that those things stack like stones. I like the choices he gives himself for them: that they be released or let them rest, neither a burden anymore.

I love the way your Prosery unfolded, Maggie, like the quiet reckoning that came ‘while folding laundry’. The writing of lists resonates with me; I do it all the time. I’m glad the ending was hopeful.

This is how we should handle guilt… understanding the lies before they are buried is the most important.
