Jalopy

A jalopy doesn’t pretend.
It rattles when it moves,
carries dents like memories,
and keeps going anyway.

Once, I thought progress meant shiny things—
new engines, smooth rides,
no evidence of wear.

Now I admire the jalopy.

It’s the car that learned every road the hard way.
The one that starts even when it shouldn’t.
The one that knows how to survive on patched hope
and stubborn faith.

We don’t celebrate jalopies enough.
We overlook the vehicles
that carried us through storms,
breakdowns,
and long stretches of not knowing.

Some of us are jalopies.
Still running.
Still showing up.
Still getting where we need to go.

And honestly?
That’s something worth honoring.
