Your challenge for this week
A person wakes up with the ability to hear the emotions of objects.

The Weight of Things
I woke up the morning I could hear objects
thinking I was dying.
It started with my pillow.
Before sunrise it whispered:
Too tired. Too used. Too flattened.
I sat up, heart thudding.
My alarm clock judged me next:
Late. Again. Predictable.
I blinked at the coffee mug on the bedside table
and it sighed:
Empty. Unfulfilled. Cold.
I thought it was madness — until I walked into the hallway
and the floorboards groaned:
Worn. Footsteps too familiar. Still appreciated.
The world began to sing in silent feelings:
The spoon in the drawer trembled with longing
for something sweet to lift.
The shower tiles murmured regret —
cold mornings missed, heat unused.
The doorknob buzzed with fear and excitement
every time I reached for it.
Even the walls breathed tired comfort,
as though they had been holding in secrets
just to keep me safe.
At first, it was overwhelming —
a chorus of small sorrows and silent hopes
from every object I touched.
But then I learned to listen differently.
I heard the window frame
humming longing for open air.
The keys in my pocket whispered guilt
for all the places we never went.
The shoes by the door chuckled
with remembered laughter on rainy days.
And the mirror —
oh, the mirror —
it quietly confessed:
Carry kindness. You are softer than you think.
That day I discovered that objects keep memory
the way we keep breath —
pressed and waiting until someone listens.
And I learned the truth:
Nothing is truly silent unless we choose not to hear.
