Your challenge for this week

A single light flickers on in an abandoned house, and someone inside whispers your name.

Missy’s MAD Challenge # 074

The house had been empty so long
the night had claimed it—
dust learning the shape of silence,
walls forgetting how voices sound.
Then one light flickered on.
Just one.
As if the house remembered something
and wasn’t sure it was allowed to.
I stood at the edge of the property,
where old paths ended abruptly,
where bridges once stood
and now only the idea of crossing remained.
That’s when it happened.
Not loud.
Not dramatic.
A whisper slid through the broken air
and wrapped itself around my ribs.
My name.
Not spoken the way strangers say it,
but the way history does—
careful, familiar,
as if it still knew how to reach me
even after I had learned how to leave.
I didn’t run.
I didn’t answer.
I had already crossed every fire
that ever tried to claim me.
Already learned that survival
sometimes means becoming unrecognisable
to the people who taught you your first words.
The light flickered again.
Inside that house
lived the version of me
who stayed quiet to keep the peace,
who memorised footsteps,
who learned love by subtraction.
She whispered my name
because she was still there.
But I was not.
I stood outside, breathing,
whole in ways that once felt forbidden,
listening as the house exhaled
what it could never keep.
The light went out.
And for the first time,
nothing followed me home.
