How have your political views changed over time?

Asking me about politics, huh? 😄
Well… let’s just say my journey hasn’t been linear.
When I voted for the very first time at 18, I was hopeful.
Idealistic.
Maybe even a little naïve — the good kind of naïve, where you genuinely believe you can help change the world with your vote.
I believed in promises.
I believed in leaders.
I believed in the idea of politics serving people.
Now?
I’m mostly disappointed.
So many elections feel the same:
suddenly children, the elderly, the vulnerable, and “the underdogs” become the centre of every speech and every promise.
Hope gets stirred up.
You think, “Finally… someone is listening.”
And then the election ends.
And so do most of those noble agendas.
The passion melts away.
The speeches fade.
And the people who needed help most
are once again left waiting.
Yes, I know voting matters.
Democracy matters.
Voices matter.
But over time I’ve found myself caring far more about local leadership.
Community.
Real life.
The people who actually shape daily living — the ones who run the town hall, the ones close enough to see reality, not just statistics.
I’ve lived in the Canary Islands for almost fifteen years now,
and I’ve never voted here.
As a foreign resident, you can generally only vote in local elections, not national ones — which says a lot in itself about how identity, belonging, and politics intersect.
So my political view today?
Less trust in speeches.
More faith in people.
More faith in grassroots strength.
More faith in community compassion than political performance.
Maybe I don’t want grand saviours anymore.
I just want accountability, honesty, and leaders who remember
that real people live inside the numbers they argue about.
