#318 WDYS prompt

This snowy street took me straight back to my childhood in Norway — as if someone opened a door in my memory and let the cold, magical air slip through again.
I see December the way it used to feel…
The shimmer of fresh snow under the street lamps,
the grown-ups hurrying through town with red cheeks and full arms,
the quiet urgency of “Christmas is coming, we must finish everything.”
I see myself as a little girl,
laces tied too loosely, wobbling out onto the frozen lake,
where the whole world seemed to glow from beneath the ice.
We skated until our toes were numb,
laughing clouds of breath into the crisp air,
believing winter was a spell cast just for us.
December has always been magical to me —
my birthday tucked inside it like a secret star,
Christmas sparkling at the end like a promise.
Even now, that month holds a softness I cannot explain,
a place where innocence lives, untouched.
So when I look at this picture,
I don’t just see a street in a snowstorm.
I see home.
I see the child I was.
I see the wonder that still rises inside me every time the year leans toward its end
and whispers,
“Remember who you were, love…
and who you’re becoming.”
