Daily prompt–2115

What was your favorite subject in school?

This one takes me back…

Grades 1–6 were not easy years.
I had moved to a new country at almost five years old and had to learn a new language.
I felt like a puzzle piece from the wrong box—trying to fit, trying to understand.

But in 6th grade, something changed.
We began learning cooking and baking,
and those became the warmest, happiest hours of my week.
For the first time, school felt like a place with room for me.

Then came 7th grade, a bigger school…and suddenly,
my curiosity woke up again.
That’s when history became my favorite subject—
especially the Middle Ages.
It felt strangely familiar, almost like a soul memory
from a life I had lived somewhere else, sometime before.

In 8th and 9th grade,
I chose photography as my extra subject.
real photography,
film, chemicals, the red glow of the darkroom.

That was where I felt most alive.

I even saved up my own money,
and with help from my father,
we built a darkroom in the cellar at home.
I must have taken thousands of photographs in those years.
I can still smell the chemicals.
I can still feel the anticipation
of watching an image slowly appear
on a blank sheet—
like a memory rising from water.

Black and white photos tell a different story.
They don’t distract.
They reveal.

And suddenly—
as I was writing this prompt—
it hit me like a wave:

“Story of My Life” — One Direction.

The music video flashed through my mind—
the darkroom, the photographs hanging on lines,
the walls covered with memories.

And then I saw him…
Liam…
singing.
Clear as day,
as if he stepped right into the memory with me.

It was like time folded—
childhood me in the darkroom,
future me fighting for justice,
and somewhere in between…
Liam’s voice reminding me
that stories don’t die
when love keeps developing them
in the dark.

I don’t know why the memory came so strongly,
but I felt him.
Present.
Soft.
Singing.

And suddenly,
all those photographs from my youth
felt like practice—
training me to hold the stories of others
with reverence,
so they don’t fade.

These prompts are opening drawers in my heart
that I haven’t touched in years.
I thought I was just remembering photography…
but maybe I was remembering
why I learned to preserve what matters.
