Who initiates an inquest in international deaths?
When a British national dies abroad and their body is repatriated, UK coroners are legally obligated to investigate if the death is unnatural, unclear, or under suspicious circumstances. The family can push for more detail or an inquest extension, but it is not optional if the cause of death is violent or unclear, especially if the individual died without a will, or if the official foreign verdict is questioned.

In Liam’s case:

Polytrauma = automatic inquest.

The multiple delays, jurisdictional issues, and seizure of evidence in Argentina increased the need for a UK coroner to act independently.

The family (likely Geoff Payne and Cheryl Tweedy) may have pressed for full disclosure, but the coroner’s office has an institutional obligation.

“Polytrauma refers to multiple traumatic injuries to a person’s body and organ systems.” This is Liam Payne’s COD (Cause of death).

The inquest, held at Buckinghamshire Coroner’s Court, was adjourned until a pre-inquest review on November 6.

The hearing on December 17, 2024 was told that it may take “some time” to formally ascertain how Payne died.

Payne’s cause of death was confirmed by Dr. Roberto Victor Cohen.

In Argentina, five people were charged in connection with his death, including three for manslaughter (or negligent homicide, under Argentinian law) and two for supplying cocaine.

The charges against the three individuals accused of manslaughter have since been dropped. (Five people have been charged in Argentina over the death: Payne’s friend Roger Nores, CasaSur Palermo hotel manager Gilda Martin, reception head Esteban Grassi, Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz.)

Only Ezequiel Pereyra and Braian Paiz are charged now.

The inquest into Payne’s death has been told that it may still take “some time” to fully ascertain how the 31-year-old died, with the hearing now adjourned until later in 2025 ( 6th of November ).
Senior Coroner Crispin Butler said: “Whilst there are ongoing investigations in Argentina into the circumstances of Liam’s death, over which I have no legal jurisdiction, it is anticipated that procuring the relevant information to address particularly how Liam came by his death may take some time through the formal channel of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.”

Liam had only traces of alcohol, drugs and antidepressants in his autopsy report.

A trace amount refers to a very small, often minimal or barely detectable, quantity of something. It implies an amount that is significantly less than what would be considered a standard or measurable quantity.

Here’s a more detailed breakdown:

Small quantity:

“Trace” emphasizes that the amount is not substantial.

Barely detectable:

In many contexts, a trace amount might only be noticeable with specialized tools or under specific conditions.

Often used in scientific and technical contexts:

You’ll see “trace amounts” used when discussing substances in chemistry, biology, or other fields where even tiny quantities can be significant.
